GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The Behavioral Health Specialist (BHS) role is to provide brief, culturally relevant counseling interventions for First Steps clients. This role is vital in improving birth outcomes and responding to client’s individual risks and needs. The BHS’ primary role is that of assessment and counseling/intervention. Secondary roles include resource provision and advocacy work – case management. The BHS must have working knowledge of the First Steps Program in order to provide the required services.

2. Ability to form and sustain effective relationships with clients, team members, and community providers.
3. Ability to exercise balanced judgment in evaluating situations, making decisions, and handle difficult or confrontational situations in a calm, consistent, equitable manner.
4. Demonstrate respect and appreciation for diversity (cultural relevant, multicultural).
5. Ability to manage time, resources and client caseload.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Masters Degree in social work, behavioral sciences, or related field, with one year’s experience in community social services or public health services.
2. Excellent verbal and written communications as well as computer skills
3. Familiarity with community and issues that affect immigrant/migrant populations
4. Bilingual in English/Spanish
5. Community outreach experience
6. Possess a valid Washington State driver’s license.
