In 2005, I started the physician assistant program at Pacific University in Portland. At that time graduation seemed an eternity away.
When I first glimpsed at my clinical schedule I remember feeling overwhelmed by all of the locations that I would be living that were completely foreign to me.
I knew from the start of the program that I would be traveling, and indeed I did, seven of the last twelve months.
Besides the experiences in Portland, I was in Silverton OR, Roseburg OR, Boise ID, Post Falls ID, the Bahamas and lastly, Othello. Last is not least, as Othello has been a great way to finish and utilize my previous experience in pediatrics and internal medicine, along with my various other rotations. Honestly, Othello has been one of the best.
I was able to see patients of all ages, from wellness to illness of various stages.
I truly experienced a comprehensive view of people and their various health care needs.
As I planned my stay in Othello, my concerns were not about what I would learn, but much more basic – where was Othello, could I find a place to stay that I could afford, and could I get home to my family on weekends. I had found from previous clinical experiences that individuals who volunteer to be preceptors are dedicated to teaching and I hoped that to be true with Doctor Ruby Farooqi, and I was not disappointed. She was a role model for providing the best possible care, in a compassionate and caring way. She challenged me to learn and supported me at every opportunity.
Along with Dr. Farooqi, I believe there is an incredible health care team at CBHA. I saw how a multidisciplinary team works together to provide the best possible care. I developed a new appreciation for how physicians, physician assistants, nursing staff, lab and x-ray techs, and mental health providers all worked together to contribute to the well-being of each patient.
I went to the Internet to learn about Othello, and I read about a small rural community within fairly easy travel distance of the Tri Cities. I honestly did not expect the state-of-the art health care delivery provided in clinics that was better than any I had seen. I would count myself very fortunate to live in Othello and have my care needs met by the team at CBHA.
Graduation from Pacific turned out not to be an eternity away, but right around the corner. As I look back at my experiences, I am thankful for the contributions of people like Dr Farooqi, Dr. Keen, and Dr. RS Bunch as terrific people and as a fantastic professional team. Every day in Othello I learned a tremendous amount that I will carry into practice. I thank Dr. Farooqi and each member of the team contributed to that. My sincere thanks to each of you.
