Celebrating a Year of Healthy Change with Our Diabetes Prevention Group

Our Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP), developed by the CDC, is designed to promote healthy lifestyle changes that can help prevent or delay type 2 diabetes. This isn’t a fad diet, an exercise class, or a quick fix; it’s a year-long program focused on lasting results and real-life changes.

Throughout this year’s program, DPP Coordinator, Marin De Haro Garcia led three patients, Hugo Pastor Gaspar, Delfina Torres, and Lorena P. Rosa Silva, completed their year-long journey. In their class, they learned about different topics like:

  • Eating healthy without giving up all the foods they love
  • Adding physical activity into their daily routine, even with a busy schedule
  • Setting goals and staying motivated
  • Managing stress and coping with challenges
  • Making healthier choices when eating out
  • Getting back on track if they slip from their goals

In their final class, they reflected on all that they had gained from this program. From understanding blood pressure and blood sugar levels to learning what a balanced meal truly looks like, they embraced knowledge that not only changed their own lives but also impacted their families. Many shared what they learned with their spouses, multiplying the program’s positive impact at home.

“I learned how to break unhealthy habits, say no to bad foods, and make choices that make me feel stronger and healthier,” shared Delfina Torres.

“Discipline, hard work, and good habits are going to help us live a longer life and be a healthier version of ourselves,” added Hugo Pastor Gaspar.

One of the group’s most significant milestones came from Delfina Torres, who lost an incredible 38 pounds during the program, the most out of the three participants!

The group also talked about the importance of listening to their bodies. They constantly asked themselves, “Am I really hungry, or just reaching for food out of habit?” Simple steps, such as choosing nutritious foods, going for a 30-minute walk, and practicing daily discipline, added up to life-changing progress.

To close the program, participants and their families celebrated together. Families joined in to honor their loved ones’ hard work and received giveaways, like a scale, blender, and food storage, to continue supporting meal planning and healthy choices at home.

Together, these three participants have proven that it’s never too late to start. With dedication, hard work, and healthy habits, they’re on the path to living longer, healthier lives. We’re incredibly proud of all they have accomplished and look forward to seeing how they continue to thrive!
